The Future RevealedDavid Brooks, in a column
that I agree with:
In short, the Republican Party will probably veer right in the years ahead, and suffer more defeats. Then, finally, some new Reformist donors and organizers will emerge. They will build new institutions, new structures and new ideas, and the cycle of conservative ascendance will begin again. That's spot on. The problem with the Republican Party is that they've been so successful with some of their ideas (lower taxes encourage growth) that the Democrats have now co-opted them. Oh, sure, Obama may fiddle around with the upper-end tax rates a bit, but nobody's talking about bringing back the 90% marginal rates of the 1950s or even the 70% bracket of the 1970s.
